I used to live in Chicago... qualifying me as someone who has shot in tremendously cold conditions and thus I can state that not only has Markus demonstrated strength and dedication, his display of craft is absolute mastery. Wow... goodness, mercy, these images are incredible!
I second that excellent point Scott! I've also shot a lot in the winter, and Chicago always feels colder than where I'm from in Michigan, but these a look like they're even colder still. It was certainly worth it for these images though! Markus definitely has true dedication to his craft.
i once stupidly scouted a shoot on the Northline that i was doing two days out. Duh, it was -20 or so and the wind chill was horrific. And me, wearing regular ol’ waterproof boots. And… the stop had no heated area and the trains were… delayed… by 45 min or so… realized i could no longer feel my feet… an hour later back at the house, even 10 min over a heater did nothing… was terrifying and a close call. Moral of the story: Arctic conditions require Arctic gear.
Wow, sounds like you narrowly dodged a frostbite bullet. Glad it was just a close call. That’s for sure, Markus must have had Arctic gear to make these images.
Interestingly Michigan used to get those kind of subzero conditions occasionally when I was a kid, but for the last 10-15 years it seems southeastern Michigan winters are getting increasingly mild.
I moved end of 2020... that particular storm was in 2019 and was dubbed CHIBERIA... because it was! ;) I noticed that a number of times we dodged bullets but the NE got hammered... particularly Boston.
These transported me back in time to when I loved in Alaska. The crunch if snow beneath my boots, the intense cold of -30 against your face balanced out by the beautiful open night sky.
I can feel and hear your description in the images, even though I've never been to Alaska or Scandinavia. Really happy to hear you loved the feature Brian!
This work is incredible! After looking at Markus’s site I will definitely buy the book. Thank you for sharing his work. With so many amazing artists out there do you think you’ll publish another anthology?
That's great Peter, I love we could point you towards an artist's work you could connect with to buy the book. The book does look nice. Yes, I'm actually thinking about launching a call for another survey/anthology book soon.
These are the best winter photographs I've seen. Really stunning. Thank you for showcasing his work.
Our pleasure Chris! They really do capture a starkly stunning winter feel.
I take a lot of winter shots, especially in the midwest this past year. These are truly inspiring.
Really glad to hear you’re inspired by them. I’d love to see some of your Midwest winter images from the past year Chris.
Thank you! I culled out a handful to send your way. We Transfer.
Thanks Chris, I'll check them out!
Stunning.
I think so too. Glad you enjoyed this one Luis!
These have such a crazy spooky feel to them - especially that one of the ship all lit up in the distance. The Zombie apocalypse is coming ha!
Great way to describe it Trevor! That one is especially eerie and mysterious.
Incredible set. Feels liminal and almost surreal
Thank you Mason! Yeah I completely agree, it makes for a really striking mood.
Great images, really like the atmosphere.
Me too Ruben, I’m happy to hear you enjoyed this one.
Wow! These are absolutely fantastic images. I would love to see an interview with Markus about the making of this project. What a great body of work!
That great suggestion Christian! I’m really happy to hear you enjoyed this one so much!
Wow, I’m glad you’ve introduced me to his work.
Very happy to be able to make the introduction Clarence! That's one of the main goals of this project.

Beautiful set! Loved all the gradations of blue.
Happy to hear that! It’s a great it palette isn’t it?
I love his work! He is also on Glass.
Me too Per! Good to know, I’ve never checked out Glass. Should I?
The ship images are especially captivating. The entire series, inspiring. Thanks for sharing!
Yeah those ones are great! I'm glad you found it inspiring Jason, that's exactly what I'm hoping for with these features!

Love the feature. These are amazing images.

This work is so good, I will checking more of this out for sure
That's great, that's exactly what these features are for.
I love how the shadows on a window create a pattern that is then repeated by the train carriages. Amazing!
Agreed, that's a great little reoccurring motif!
Love this feature!
Glad to hear it Peter!
